Ancestry Library Edition

Come to the Library and check out the ANCESTRY Library Edition database. Here you can search the US Census through 1930, Naturalization records, the US Immigration Collection, the Social Security Death Index, Military records, and much more. This database is only available in the Library.

 This database is rich in material from American genealogical sources. It includes local and family histories plus other unique primary sources. Also featured: the digitized UMI Genealogy & Local History Collection, the  U.S. Federal Census, the Periodical Source Index (PERSI), the Revolutionary War Pension and  Bounty Land Warrant Application Files and the Freedman’s Bank records.  A complement to Ancestry (Library edition), this database can be used in the library or accessed from home (with a valid Rutherford Library card).

NY Times Historical Database

The New York Times Historical Database from Proquest (and provided by BCCLS) allows you to search the Times from the library computers or from home with a valid library card. Here you can find obituaries and other types of source information. 

From within the Rutherford Library- click the logo, then choose Proquest, and then click Proquest Historical Newspapers New York Times

From home- Click the logo, login with your library card number, then choose Proquest, then click Proquest Historical Newspapers New York Times

 

GENEALOGY LINKS:

Ellis Island (free registration) – Search for naturalization information and see the ships which brought your ancestors to the US.

Stephen Morse’s website provides alternate ways to access information at some genealogy sites such as Ancestry.

Cyndi’s List – a comprehensive site and a good place to start your research.

Rootsweb –says it’s the “oldest and largest free genealogy site.”

Ancestry Magazine –This magazine is no longer being published, but the back issues are all available free of charge online.

Family History Library resources from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Says it offers “the largest collection of free family history, family tree and genealogy records in the world.” Must register (free) to access all web site resources and features.

Old Fulton Postcards – Search old New York State historical newspaper pages. Much more than postcards, this is a wonderful (free!) database of old newspapers, historical photos, and genealogy information for New York.

VITAL STATISTICS:

National Center for Health Statistics – website provides links to vital records, arranged by state.
